Reserve Education Activities Fall - Winter 2008
Space is Limited and REGISTRATION is REQUIRED Meet at HOBCAW BARONY DISCOVERY CENTER Parking Area
North Inlet Kayak Tours Join Reserve and Surf the Earth staff for a naturalist-guided tour through the creeks of North Inlet. This program includes instruction in basic kayaking, a natural history overview, and educational highlights of the North Inlet ecosystem. Fee includes kayak, paddle, personal floatation device, and water. Bring snack, camera, binoculars, and wear sturdy shoes. Meet at the Hobcaw Barony Discovery Center parking lot. Participants will be transported by van to Clambank Creek.
Cost: $50/person; weather permitting; limited to 6 participants; please call to register. Times for all trips are 9:30 am - 1:30 pm
September 8th (Monday) September 23rd (Tuesday)October 9th (Thursday)Fishes of North InletParticipants will learn about fish, crab, and shrimp species common to our creeks and assist with a long-term biological monitoring project. Old clothes and sneakers or boots are recommended. Be prepared for walking through marsh mud, biting insects, and outdoor conditions. Bring a bag lunch and water, if desired, and meet at the Hobcaw Barony Discovery Center parking lot. Participants will be transported by van to the creek and seawater laboratory facilities.

September 15th (Monday) 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm October 14th (Tuesday) 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm Bike to the Boardwalk Travel by bike on gravel roads through the forests of Hobcaw to the Reserve’s salt marsh boardwalk onbeautiful North Inlet. Meet Reserve staff in the Hobcaw Visitor Center parking lot and bike 2.5 miles (each way) to the boardwalk to experience a leisurely salt marsh exploration. Upland forest habitats, wildlife, salt marsh ecology and a variety of other topics will be discussed during the trip. Bring your own bike (all terrain tires recommended), snack, water, cameras, and binoculars (if desired).

Fall Wildflowers Take a walk through maritime, upland forest, and wetland habitats to see fall in bloom at Hobcaw Barony. Reserve staff and naturalists will help identify common fall wildflowers. Meet at the Discovery Center parking area to travel by van to selected sites. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring insect repellant. Cameras and binoculars welcomed.

September 26th (Friday) 10:00 am-12:00 pm
North Inlet - Winyah Bay Appreciation Day Visit and explore the Winyah Bay Estuary aboard the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Education Vessel Discovery. Participants will learn about the North Inlet - Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR), the biology of plants and animals that live in the estuary, and will get a chance to see animals collected in the trawls. Meet at the Hobcaw Barony Discovery Center parking lot. Participants will be transported by van to the marina.
