MEET AT HOBCAW VISITOR CENTER PARKING AREA

 

Oysters & Clams in the Creek & Kitchen

Text Box:

Learn all about oysters and clams, including the importance of bivalves to the salt marsh, some of the interesting animals that inhabit the reefs and mudflats, rules & regulations for collecting, and how to choose and gather your own.  We will start with a visit to a nearby tidal creek (boots or old shoes recommended) to demonstrate collection techniques, then travel to Kudzu Bakery in Georgetown to cook and enjoy a tasty treat of freshly prepared oysters and clams.  Cost:  $25/person; please register to reserve a space.

Winter Birds of Hobcaw

The South Carolina coast is an important wintering area for waterfowl and shorebirds.  Join Wendy Allen, Reserve Manager, for a guided birding trip through the forests and marshes of Hobcaw, with emphasis on the shorebirds that congregate on marsh banks at high tide.  Dress warmly and bring water, snack, and binoculars (if you have them).  FREE, but please register to reserve a space.

Bike to the Boardwalk

Travel by bike on gravel roads through the forests of Hobcaw to the Reserve’s salt marsh boardwalk on beautiful North Inlet.  Meet Reserve staff in the Hobcaw Visitor Center parking lot and bike 2.5 miles (each way) to the boardwalk to experience a leisurely salt marsh exploration.  Upland forest habitats, wildlife, salt marsh ecology and a variety of other topics will be discussed during the trip.  Bring your own bike (all terrain tires recommended), snack, water, cameras, and binoculars (if desired).  Times for all trips are 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM, weather permitting.  FREE, but please call to register in case of last minute program changes.

North Inlet Kayak Tours

Join the Reserve and Surf the Earth for a naturalist-guided tour through the creeks of North Inlet.  The program includes instruction in basic kayaking, a natural history overview, and educational highlights of the North Inlet ecosystem. Fee includes kayak, paddle, personal floatation device and water.  Bring snack, camera, binoculars, and wear sturdy shoes.  Meet at Hobcaw Barony Visitor Center parking lot at the start time.  Times for all trips are 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM, weather permitting.  Cost: $50/person, with a 6 person limit; please call to register.

Fishes of North Inlet

This program includes a trip to a nearby tidal creek to take water measurements, pull a seine, and collect and identify an assortment of estuarine creatures.  Participants will learn about fish, crab, and shrimp species common to our creeks and assist with a long-term biological monitoring project.  Old clothes and sneakers or boots are recommended.  Be prepared for walking through marsh mud, biting insects, and outdoor conditions.  Bring a bag lunch and water, if desired, and meet at the entrance to Hobcaw Barony promptly at the start time to travel by van to the creek and seawater laboratory facilities.  FREE; please call to register for one or more of the dates below.
