Hobcaw Barony Research Tour: The Bounty of Belle’s Legacy

Join Hobcaw Barony staff to travel some of the Barony’s “back roads” and experience seldom seen areas of the property. The tour will begin at the grounds of Bellefield Plantation to discuss Belle Baruch and her love of the Barony and her vision for what it should be after her death. On the way to the village, participants will be able to view the exterior of Belle’s airplane hangar and discuss her being a pilot, some of her airplanes, and women in aviation. Another stop will be at one of the villages to learn more about the history and research that is taking place on the Barony regarding the African Americans who once lived on the land from early rice growing times to the last inhabitant’s departure in 1952. Next, travel Crab Hall Road to USC/NERR/NOAA and view the outdoor Labs, Research stations, and the beauty of Hobcaw Barony’s pristine 5,000 salt marsh at North Inlet. Learn about the history of this marshland area, as well as some of the ongoing research. The last stop will be Clemson University; Belle Baruch Forest Ecology Building, discussing some of the ongoing projects and research conducted by Clemson. This is a wonderful opportunity to see and discuss, firsthand, why this 16,000 acres known as Hobcaw Barony is held in perpetuity for Research, and Education, and is so rich with history. (Low impact -.Be prepared to ride on a 14 passenger bus over rustic roads comprised of sand and dirt.) This is a rain or shine event. Reservations required.
