Wilderness First Aid Certification

WFA courses are designed to meet the needs of individuals who are responsible for the medical care of others outdoors, people who work in remote settings, and recreationalists who want to be prepared. This session offered at Hobcaw Barony will have a focus on coastal environments and first aid around water.

  • Course Description – Instructed by Longleaf Wilderness Medicine. Topics include patient assessment, how to provide long-term care with limited resources, the decision of when to call for more help, and treatments such as splinting, wound care and managing spine injuries. The course schedule includes classroom time as well as extensive hands-on skills practice.

  • Course length – 16 hours over two days (November 19 – 20th)

  • Certifications – Wilderness First Aid, Epinephrine Auto-Injector Administration; Certification Length – 2 years

  • Cost – $275 per person (Financial assistance available on a case-by-case basis. I f you have a significant financial barrier, please contact Maeve Snyder directly at msnyder@baruch.sc.edu)

  • CPR certification (optional) – Add on a 3-hour CPR training on the morning of November 21st. Please indicate if you plan to participate when you register. Additional fee of $50.

  • L odging – A limited amount of dorm housing is available for $30 per night. If you are interested in staying on-site, please contact Maeve Snyder directly at msnyder@baruch.sc.edu.

  • Weather – This class takes place both inside and outside, regardless of weather conditions. Please dress accordingly; considerations should include layering, rain gear, boots and non-cotton clothing.

  • Scenarios – You may be kneeling or laying on the ground and get dirt or mud on your clothing during the medical scenarios used for skills practice

  • Lunch/Breaks – C offee and light snacks will be provided. Participants must bring their own lunch. A picnic area, refrigerator, and microwave will be available.
